The Journey Begins: Getting Unlost

A project born from wrong turns and right lessons

Welcome to Getting Unlost!

This is where wrong turns—missed flights, awkward encounters, unexpected detours—become stories worth telling. The stories reveal life lessons in clarity, connection, and growth, always tied to the places where they happen. Distilled lessons become guides for your own journey.

What is Unlost?

You won't find "unlost" in most dictionaries (yet). Think of it as the opposite of lost—not quite found, but an active process of regaining direction and realizing you were never far to begin with.

It's a lexical gap I've chosen to fill.

Why This Space Exists

We all get lost—in our work, relationships, or life. Getting Unlost is about treating those moments as teachers, not failures.

Setbacks and surprises often hold the most valuable lessons.

About the Story Compass

Each story ends with three points, the Unlost Compass:

  • Signal a truth that surfaces from what happened
  • Shift a reframe in mindset or perspective
  • Step the smallest move you can make to practice the shift

It's a quick way to take something practical with you, and learn from experiences.

An Invitation

I'd love for this to be more than just my stories. If you've had a moment of being lost—funny, messy, or meaningful—please consider sharing your story. You can also explore stories already here, discover the places where they unfold, or learn from the growing collection of guides.

Who I Am

I'm Matthew: traveler, language learner, diver, writer. Over the years, I've learned the best lessons often appear when plans fall apart.

A Toast to the Journey

Here's to detours, discoveries, and becoming unlost—again and again.

Story by Matthew Fisher

I am a traveler, divemaster, technologist, and storyteller who's learned not to take life too seriously. You'll find me laughing (often) at life's messiness and sharing humor and lessons that bring clarity to anyone feeling a bit lost or looking for direction.
