Lessons From One Year of Travel

Reflections from a year of travel with lessons in clarity, love, freedom, and grounding

One year, nine countries, countless lessons. Here's what long-term travel taught me about living intentionally.

Lessons in clarity & control

  • Plans go sideways — Laughter fixes what control can't.
  • I can't know what I'm supposed to do — I just pursue a vision with discipline.
  • Time passes and everything changes — What matters is how I show up.
  • Limbo and sadness surface — Reflection keeps me clear.
  • Booking last minute (except flights) works — I find deals, stay flexible, and avoid pressure.

Lessons in love & connection

  • I've met people from everywhere — Brief intersections hold beauty.
  • Goodbyes hurt but remind me I'm truly connected — Some friends last a day, but their presence lingers.
  • The hardest goodbye was unexpected — It expanded my heart.
  • I can still love deeply — And feel deep love from another.
  • People back home can't always relate — Sometimes I have to translate experiences.
  • Belonging isn't about staying — It's about understanding and being understood.

Lessons in freedom & surrender

  • I'm in touch with my inner boy — I let him express himself.
  • Long-term travel isn't vacation — It's raw, real life.
  • I need less than I think — Lightness is luxury.
  • Letting go of plans invites surprise — Curiosity is enough.
  • Peak experiences come when I'm open — I don't need to chase them.
  • I can be anywhere, do anything, and be anyone — With the responsibility of staying aligned.

Lessons in growth & grounding

  • Stories are how I make sense of movement — Sharing creates meaning.
  • Presence defines me — Every challenge is a choice to be myself.
  • Reflection heals me — I must pause.
  • Long-term travel is transforming — Full of wonder, color, and connection.
  • Routine takes effort — But exists wherever I create it.
  • Eating alone is a quiet strength — Solitude is peace.
  • Food poisoning and hangovers happen — Always have water and crackers ready.

Reflection

Year two has already begun. I don't know where it leads, and I won't pretend I can plan it. I only know I'm walking forward with clearer eyes, a bigger heart, and a lighter pack.

Story by Matthew Fisher

I am a traveler, divemaster, technologist, and storyteller who's learned not to take life too seriously. You'll find me laughing (often) at life's messiness and sharing humor and lessons that bring clarity to anyone feeling a bit lost or looking for direction.
