Snapshot of Koh Tao
Koh Tao is a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand. It's marked by steep green hills, granite boulders, and turquoise bays.
It has a laid-back but active energy, buzzing with backpackers, dive schools, and beach bars, while still offering hidden coves and quiet corners. Many travelers pair a week or more here with visits to nearby islands Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
Diving is the island's main draw. With hundreds of dive centers and abundant tropical marine life, Koh Tao is one of the world's most popular and affordable places to get certified or deepen your skills for both SCUBA and freediving.
Outside the water, you'll find viewpoints, yoga, and a welcoming community. Koh Tao offers plenty of delicious and affordable food, from street vendors to cozy cafés. Most cafés provide Wi-Fi and restrooms, making them easy bases for both remote work and downtime.
Getting around is primarily by scooter, as there's no public transit and few taxis. An international driving permit (IDP) makes it easier to explore safely.
